July 2006
I mounted PIONEER car stereo speaker TS-J1200A on MM-151S.
It had a more docile sound than I had imagined.
It has a clear well-projected high note because of 2-way speaker
and a real vocal.

TS-J1200A
TS-J1200A

It has a superiority over MM-151ST with ALTEC CF404-8A
about the sound reproduction of simple musical composition.
Every CD has different recording,
the writer's point of view is different, too.
I thought it's unreasonable to do all the work alone
by having the second speakers with different personalities.

I took a sponge of PIONEER TS-J1200A.
TS-J1200A in the photo is that I tucked a piece of
black cardboard supplied with ALTEC CF404-8A between TS-J1200
and the baffle board of MM-151S.

I chose PIONEER TS-J1200 from among car stereo speakers because
I wanted the coaxial 2-way speaker.
As a result, I feel good about the choice.

June 2006

Last December,
I bought
SSC coated front baffle boards for FOSTEX FE108Eƒ°.
Thank you for leaving a pilot holes for FE108Eƒ°
on the front baffle boards.
Despite this, sorry I have never written sooner.

It is now 6 months since I bought
the front baffle boards.

I painted MM-151 black
except the front baffle boards,
and I put a black
PVC sheets
on that.
Then I fixed the speaker nets to
FOSTEX FE108Eƒ°.

The low pitch sound is
now more understatement.
Because I mounted
the powerful FOSTEX FE108Eƒ°
than the recommended drivers,
then I fixed the canceling magnets
to FE108Eƒ°.

MM-151 with FOSTEX FE108Eƒ°

The mid-high sound is now more wonderful.
This is the most natural sound.

I live in a multifamily building.
And that I favor controlled low pitch sound,
b
ut that's a robust low pitch sound
with a characteristic back loaded
horn system.

FE108Eƒ°
FE108Eƒ°

My system is dynamic because all of my audio instruments are
re-creations or my own devices, but MM-151 with FE108Eƒ°
bring out
the best in my system.
When I fine-tuned the amp, MM-151 with FE108Eƒ° could describe
its
distinction perfectly.

MM-151

Straightforward loudspeakers were completed, I was satisfied
that the aging are almost finished.

I retightened MM-151 beyond the period of drying.
As a result, I was surprised much more tight sound.
I'm having a great time from musics, movies, TV programs and radio.

May 2006
I went to a speaker shop in Akihabara, Tokyo.
I listened to the sound of its anniversary-modeled
2-way rear bass reflex speaker. It was a good sound.
The shop manager said,
"These speaker units are available for back loaded horn system, too."

I saw the 2-way back loaded horn speaker using a woofer and
a tweeter in
Mr.Nagaoka's book, and purchased
DLX-F177 and MM-171, heartened
by the speaker designed by him.
I painted MM-171 with
two-pack urethane paint, including surfacer.

As for the light sound such as female vocal music, guitar and clarinet,
MM-151S with ELCY Electric LC-12S has a superiority over
MM-171 with ALPINE DLX-F177.
But as for the heavy electric bass music like hard rock,
MM-171 with DLX-F177 shows overwhelming strength.

M160RM
M160RM

I bought MM-171 and Mercury M160RM about a year ago.
I became quite interested in the painting because MDF look cheap.
I wanted to coat with
SSC, but I gave up the idea
because of lack of funds.

First, I bonded all the parts except the front and the side baffle boards
with
a school glue, and I polished its outside with sandpaper.
Next, I painted all the parts including the inside of the horn
with
a sanding sealer.
(horns: once, front baffles: twice, others: thrice)
After that, I polished all the parts with 300-grit sandpaper.
I was thoroughly delighted with the end result.

I chose a teak-colored
urethane varnish as the top coat paint.
I brushed them with it, but my choice was a slip-up.
It left a streaky surface because I don't have the skill of
the brush painting. It is MDF but woodtone.

At this point, I painted only one MM-171, so one is finished
and the other is unpainted MM-171. I compared both sounds.
Clearly, the volume from finished MM-171 was much greater
than unpainted MM-171, also the low-pitched tone.
Painting gave the sound a sense of depth, too.

I utilized lessons from the past to the other painting.
I brushed them while transmitting pressure equally with carefully
when I brushing.
It was a much better finish than last time,
but it left a little streaky surface.

As a result,
clear lacquer seems to bring a better result for the finish,
and also blacking.

I was screwed shut the 4 corners of the front baffle boards.
(I buried
the implantable knurled nuts within the receiving end.)
So, the sealing performance more improved by that.

I felt that the back loaded horn is an instrument.
Next time, I want to buy SSC coated MM-191T.

I bought MM-151S and ALTEC CF204-8A in February 2004.
And I must admit I got caught in ALTEC's spell.
I need a little more bass...
So I bought extra sized MM-181 for ALTEC CD408-8A in August 2004.

CD408-8A
CD408-8A

I was satisfied to have greater bass than MM-151S.
However, it started up to me as like,
"If I mount the drivers from the inside...?"
"If I reduce the capacity of the air chambers...?"

I asked Hasehiro's opinion.
Hasehiro says I already tried it before, and I felt the horn effect
of the baffle board despite 2mm instead of as the capacity
of the air chambers
.

If I upheap another board as the inner baffle board...?
I was therefore I ordered custom-made 2 baffle boards each
with tapered bore.
I received the custom-made 2 outer baffle boards
and 2 inner baffle boards in February 2005.

Before
only baffle
only one baffle board
After
baffle with inner
one baffle with one inner board

I adhered the outer baffle board and the inner baffle board strongly
with
epoxy bonding agent.
And I filled a slight gap in the baffle aperture with
epoxy wood putty.

The sound rushes fiercely forward.
It seemed like they are playing music at about 30cm short
from MM-181 before remodeling.
But now, it seems like they are playing music at about 100cm short
from MM-181.
MM-181 spacing is less than 150cm.

Before adhesion, I listened to music at one baffle board
after mounting from the inside.
2 baffle boards are better than 1 baffle board
about sound extrudability, but 1 baffle board is better than
2 baffle boards about sound extensity. <

I'm very happy with MM-181 and ALTEC CD408-8A.
And I am deeply attached to them.
I am planning to remount ALTEC CF204-8A from the inside of MM-151S.
Thank you for your response to my selfish requests.

(He bought MM-161S and ALTEC CF404-8A)

Report from Hasehiro

He painted MM-161S including the inside of the horns with
a transparent urethane paint.
He sent us them,
"Please compare the sound of them and unpainted MM-161S."

MDF absorbs a coating material rapidly.
So, it requires the knack and perseverance.
1.
He painted them twice with
a sanding sealer for wood filling.
2.
Next he painted them twice with
oil-based urethane varnish on it.
3.
Finally, he sprayed
clear lacquer on it.

He says I failed to spray it.
Looking closely at them, they have traces of shrunken lacquer
by chemical action.
But from a distance, they are very beautiful finish.
It shows that he did the work politely.

MM-161S

The cone papers of ALTEC CF404-8A are bright in light.
From what I have heard,
he painted them with expensive coating agent.
The coating agent was developed by a German company.
(At that time,
SSC remain to be developed.)

CF404-8A
CF404-8A

I bought MM-151ST and ALTEC CF404-8A a week ago.
I felt helpless to the low tone.
I played over the next 3 days from morning till night.
Even so, I still felt helpless to the low tone.
So, I got to work on the regulation inside the air chambers.

I removed the associated
needle felting from the air chambers.
I made mock
Tozawa styled resonaters with kraft paper
and put each 3 mock resonaters into the air chamber.
Surprisingly, the low tone began to come out.
Aha! This is Hasehiro back loaded horn sound!
I was impressed, and I listened to much music about 2 days
but it seems that the sound of one band frequency
become promiscuous by the audio source.

So, I changed to each 3 mock resonaters with
half of the associated needle felting.
It was very coherent sound, but it was also dark and dusky sound.
I changed to each 3 mock resonaters with
quarter associated needle felting from the results.
It had come close to my favorite sound.
Eventually, I was achieved by the combination of
each 4 mock resonaters with quarter associated needle felting.
I found that I like a meek and a gloomy sound
from this acoustic tuning.

I consulted Hasehiro MM owner's sites for the tuning.
There is quite a lot of acoustic absorption materials
than the other MM owners.
I used Rogers LS3/5A speakers up to now.
This may be the cause of that.

I already enjoyed the appeal of audio too much.
Hasehiro MM series allows the owners to enjoy the difference
between the sound by change of drivers.
So, I can enjoy it for many years to come.
Let me express my heartfelt appreciation to you for development
of great DIY kits.

Hasehiro back loaded came to home in the summer of 2004.
I bought MM-141S and DIY Audio SA/F80AMG
in by a fetching sound words:
Exponential curved back loaded horn speakers make
by stacking boards, and because I want to hear back loaded sound.

MM-141S with SA/F80AMG
MM-141S with DIY Audio SA/F80AMG

The opening of horn is
a beautiful curved surface without
irregularity of the mutual joined parts.
So, MM kit is easy to make.
Hasehiro Audio does a good job!

MM-141S with DIY Audio SA/F80AMG
has disparate sound that is different
from bass reflex
and closed enclosures.
It has light and crisp sound,
the opening of horn
the opening of horn
and plays unbelievable bass despite 8cm drivers.
This is probably back loaded horn sound.
Even so, the treble extends beautifully.
I am tempted to doubt whether it is a full-range sound.
Now I understand why DIYers make back loaded horn speakers
with a single full-range speaker driver.
I had a low opinion of full-range speaker driver
until I listened to the sound of MM-141S with DIY Audio SA/F80AMG.
Audio is really deep.

In January 2005, I gave MICRO COMPONENTS power into MM-141S
despite it has good sound.

First I replaced the speaker cables with #209 copper single wire
wrapped in silk.
#209 is formed in spirals, I can see maker is dedicated to it.

SR conductor

Next I also replaced
the internal wires with #209.
And I naturally attached
SR conductors, too.

I used
cotton ropes as insulation
of SR conductors.

It goes without saying that
it is improved further.
The sound roughness has gone, and it became a calm sound.
Needless to say, SR conductors have a profound effect.

 September 2005
That happened in a flash.
Suddenly my second son turned the volume knob of the amplifier
fully clockwise and turned on it.
There was smoke coming from the MM-141S with SA/F80AMG
with a loud noise, and it gave off a bad smell.
Yes. . . . DIY Audio SA/F80AMG was raised to the skies.

So I bought Tang Band W3-1231SH that everyone is talking about.
The positions of the mounting holes are quite identical
to DIY Audio SA/F80AMG.
I could easily exchange SA/F80AMG for Tang Band W3-1231SH
without any struggle.

MM-141S with TB W3-1231SH
MM-141S with Tang Band W3-1231SH

The exchange totally changed the atmosphere around here.
Of course, the sound of Tang Band W3-1231SH is completely different
from DIY Audio SA/F80AMG.

When listening to music for a short time, I think that SA/F80AMG
is better because its treble spreads well and it has a colorful sound.
But when listening to music for a long time and watching videos,
I think that W3-1231SH is definitely better.
The middle and low ranges are rich and powerful sound
not causing fatigue.
Above all, it plays vocal at a voluminous sound.
If they were seasoning, SA/F80AMG is seasoned
with refreshing soy sauce, and W3-1231SH is seasoned
with heavy Worcestershire sauce.
Both are excellent, the preference varies from person to person.

 Mr.A, Roseville, CA, USA

January 2005
I moved to California from Tokyo.
The furniture to be moved is mostly audio instrument.
I left MM-151S with DIY Audio SA/F80AMG at empty home in Tokyo.
And I brought MM-161T with FOSTEX FE108Eƒ°,
brand-new MM-151S kit and 4 speaker drivers for contrast study
into an apartment in Roseville.
4 speaker drivers are FOSTEX FE107E, DIY Audio SA/F80AMG,
ALTEC CF204-8A and FOSTEX FE88ES-R.

Fostex FE107E
FE107E

FOSTEX FE107E plays anything with a sophisticated beautiful tone,
and bass is OK.
DIY Audio SA/F80AMG
SA/F80AMG

Bass volume is the best among 4 speaker drivers,
but FOSTEX FE88ES-R is the best about the resolution of bass.
Besides, DIY Audio SA/F80AMG wants a tweeter
depending on the sound source.

Altec CF204-8A
CF204-8A

ALTEC CF204-8A lacks bass volume by mounting on MM-151S.

I put importance on resolution capability.
And I have wanted to know the origins of sound sources and amps.
So, I will eventually mount FOSTEX FE88ES-R with brass ring
on birch baffle brand-new MM-151S.
I filed off the width of birch baffles because of drying shrinkage
of MDF layered boards.

I put MM-161T with FOSTEX FE108Eƒ° in a living room,
and I'm listening to Anner Bylsma J.S.Bach Sonatas for Viola da Gamba
with writing this e-mail at midnight.
Even small volume, MM-161T with FE108Eƒ° can write the expression
of violoncello piccolo manufactured in 1700.
I guess it's because the amplifier with the loudspeaker is good attack.

    my apartment's living room

I got sea parcel posts
and unpacked them.
And I retighten up screws of
MM-161T.
All parts shrank by drying,
and it caused space between
the baffles and the layered boards
with the side boards.
So, I made order for
renewed baffles.
After that, MM-161T with FE108Eƒ° is
also playing music in top condition.

Standing wave was prominent in both rooms when they had
a few furniture, but it became better than before.
I need to reset their positions.
I would like to make Hasehiro friends in the United States.

Fostex FE166ES-R
FE166ES-R

I bought FOSTEX FE166ES-R, and mounted on my MM-171.
I was barely able to put FE166ES-R into the baffle aperture
because of a big magnet, it's a good sound.
MM-171 with FE166ES-R plays with bright tone
because I think the magnet is strong.
It has a powerful rich sound.
I was concerned about the excessive treble,
but it was my imagination.
I have pocket books in the air chambers of MM-171
as noise absorbing materials, it may be good.
FE166ES-R will play more deep bass if mount on my MM-181T,
but I'm thinking about enjoying the process of MM-171
with FE166ES-R because I set up it on a shelf.

August 2004
I bought MM-191T during the New Year holidays,
and I mounted LOWTHER PM6A.
I was absorbed in the monaural sound for about three months,
but I came to feel that the undertone is otherness feeling.
It's a wonderful undertone, it extends even low-tone range.
However, it seems unnatural.
There is a difference between the undertone
and the high-mid-pitched tone.
So, I took a go at the reverse back loaded horn system.

Reverse Back Loaded Horn
MM-191T reverse back loaded horn system with LOWTHER PM6A

I pushed a temporary baffle board into the horn openings
and remounted LOWTHER PM6A.
The legitimate front baffle boards remain open the mounting hole
for drivers.
It has an excellent natural sound, necessary and sufficient undertone.
A rumbling of the floor-like undertone
during the back loaded horn system hasn't come out.
I loved its natural and a sharp sound.

LOWTHER PM6A
PM6A

I was screwed shut the baffle boards for the reverse system
and covered the legitimate baffle boards with saran nets.
I developed a taste for piano trio from the date of purchase MM-191T.
Furthermore, I feel fabulously interested in developed
a tenor saxophone and female vocal music such as Solveig Slettahjell
since changing the system to the reverse back loaded horn.

July 2004
I purchased MM-161.
The assembling work has been completed successfully in one hour
because I purchased MM-141T before.

I changed the internal wires to lead wires one by one,
and I soft-soldered its crimp contacts by
silver solder
after swage it again.
Furthermore, I bonded the all MDF boards except the baffle
that form the back loaded horn with
wood glue.
I sanded the MM-161's surface with
abrasive paper lightly,
and I sprayed it with
acrylic lacquer colorless.

FE126E
FE126E

The speaker driver is FOSTEX FE126E for the back loaded horn system.
It was unspeakable sound.
Half a day after it became mild sound a little, but it still...
I took off the baffle board of MM-161 and took off FE126E.
Then it was elevated above the baffle level around the screw holes
on the baffle board.
I pruned away it with a knife and remounted FE126E
on the baffle board and placed it on MM-161 again.

The next day, several hours after the bass tone came out a little
and it has got a balanced sound.
The day after next, I took off the baffle board again and removed
needle felting from the air chamber.
Instead I put the
Tozawa styled resonaters inside the air chamber.
Lowly-extended bass came out, but I felt short on fun.
FOSTEX sound is not for me...?

Tozawa styled resonater

On the following day, I thought the air chamber may be too big
for rich bass.
So I put a comic book inside the air chamber.

Wowie!!
I put a more comic book, but it was out of punchy bass.
So, I put only one comic book inside the air chamber,
and I listened to a variety of CDs.
I was so impressed!!
It became a satisfactory sound, and it was past MM-141T.

Hasehiro MM series is wonderful speakers with a depth
in which all the emotions such as expectation, insecurity,
frustration and delight are intermingled.

upgraded over 3 hours.
I am totally burned out, I need to get into shape
to enjoy my audio life.
I want to change the mounting place of ALTEC 755E to a rear
and a front mounting.
I want to have control of the bass by sound absorbing materials, etc.
So, it is just trial fitting. (MM-191T with ALTEC 755E)
For now, I mounted ALTEC 755E on the front baffle boards.

755E
755E

I listened to jazz music.
From the start, I received electrified feeling.
It is the power of MM-191T back loaded horn system
with good 20cm full-range drivers.
ALTEC 755E drivers are used commodity, so they didn't need its aging.
It has good bass and a tremendous impact than I ever imagined.
I think that it is ALTEC's excellent skills for making sound.
The sound has fat depth feel.

I put JBL 077 tweeter on 8kHz, but it was out of balance.
I will try the different tweeters in the days ahead.

(subsequent day)

It was well-balanced sound when I put PIONEER PT-R7A tweeter.

SA/F80AMG
SA/F80AMG

Last month, I bought MM-141S and DIY Audio SA/F80AMG.
I have finally been painted in a month.
I regret that they were lacking in uniformity,
so I explain the process flow for your future guidance.

1.
I bonded all the parts with
a school glue,
and remove the glue out of the surface of the boxes with a wet rag.
2.
I polished the boxes with 300-grit
sandpaper.
(file off the glue out of the surface of the boxes.)
3.
I applied
a sealer to prevent the absorption into the wooden basis.
Hasehiro said
"Sanding Sealer", but I couldn't find it
at the neighborhood DIY store. So, I bought
"Wood Sealer" instead.
4.
I repeated the 2nd and the 3rd steps two more times.
(a total of 3 times) I spent about 6 hours on these drying.
5.
I applied dilute
oil-based pigmented varnish (1:3) on the boxes.
They were already lacking in uniformity at this step.
So, I sandpapered the boxes for clean away of a layer of a sealer.
But I didn't take it off, I have given up it.
6.
Varnish work - Drying (until the next day) - Sanding (300-grit)
I continued the process flow over a 5-day period.
But the color still came out too light.
7.
So, I changed the process flow.
Varnish work 3 times - Drying (until the next day) - Sanding (300-grit)
Even so, the color still came out too light.
I changed to doubling-diluted oil-based pigmented varnish. (1:2)
And I used 1000-grit
waterproof sandpaper.
8.
I continued the 6th step over a 3-week period.
Then, I completed the work with 2000-grit waterproof sandpaper
and
polishing compound.

= When I Look Back on The Work, I Have Moments of Reflection.=

A.
I should have taken more each drying time at the step-4.
B.
Mischoice of method; I should have colored the boxes with
oil stain,
and I completed the work with
transparent varnish
if I hope to complete it in a short time for a deep color.
Actually, I am intended to emphasize the midrange by overpaint
on the boxes with oil-based pigmented varnish.
I achieved a level of success on that point.
C.
I should have taken more drying time at the step-6 and 7.

= My Initial Feelings About The Sound =
a.
MM-141S with DIY Audio SA/F80AMG chooses the musical genre.
I listen to jazz, rock and Western popular music.
They play the acoustic instruments in a great tone color.
They portray the minutest details of its instruments,
and booming deep singing voice.
But in the electronic instruments, they are more than singing voice.
b.
MM-141S with DIY Audio SA/F80AMG have a great thickness
and expanding undertone. Contrabass comes to me.
It's hard to imagine that they are just 8cm drivers.
c.
I'm very happy with the high-tone range
because I used one 20cm full-range speakers up until now.
I hope that the high-tone range stretchs forth more
with the advance of aging.
d.
MM-141S with DIY Audio SA/F80AMG can evaluate
the recording condition.
To my surprise, I am now able to understand the poor recording CD.
I have mixed feelings a bit happy and a bit sad.

I'm happy with Hasehiro speakers.

CF204-8A
CF204-8A

2 weeks have passed since I mounted ALTEC CF204-8A on MM-151S.
You said,
"If you drill the pilot holes in the front baffle boards with a gimlet shallowly, you can easy to insert the mounting screws for drivers."
So I bought
the mounting screws and a gimlet in advance.

I pulled
the banana plugs for high-tone range from YAMAHA NS-8HX
for a movie theater.
Then, I inserted its plugs on the back of MM-151S.
I listened to Kristina & Laura with only 2ch.
Graphic string, particularly I felt so real the reverberation of the body
of a violoncello.
The high note was more smoothly,
but the deep bass was more weaker than I had expected.
I played a digital radio broadcasting at lower volume all night long
after playing some CDs.

The next day, I put some CDs.
The sound was more smoothly than yesterday, the bass also.
I removed the associated
needle feltings on trial, and listened.
That sound was too intense for me.
It needs something as sound absorbing materials.

I wanted to try "
Transmission Line System"
I put clamshell
tissue paper in the air chambers
to block the entrance of the horns.
Tight bass, only the somber bass came out from the horn openings.
The sound of the front of the drivers came out from their fronts.
MM-151S with ALTEC CF204-8A played in triumph,
but I felt that the sonic palette decreased.
That's like the sound from general loudspeakers.
This is good, but I bought back loaded horn speakers.

I made some
paper towel resonaters.
I rolled half-cut A4 paper and stuck it with paste.
"Bass Reflex Port...?" "Staggered...?"
I erected of 2 paper towel resonaters of different lengths
at both ends of the air chambers.
I like the sound, and I felt that the bass began to spread well.
Let's take it.

Now MM-151S with CF204-8A plays for an independent system away
from AV center.

Kristina & Laura CITY OF DREAMS

Taro Hakase Wild Stallions
Taro Hakase Airborn
Taro Hakase Hungarian Rhapsody No.2
Wynton Kelly KELLY BLUE
Sarah Vaughan Crazy and Mixed Up
Bill Evans Trio Re: Person I Knew
United States Marine Band Ride of the Valkyries

I listened to all kinds of CDs.
Jazz is excellent.
Strings are so realistic; the violin, the violoncello, the Chinese fiddle,
the guitar, the cembalo, the harp, the arpa etc.
Human voice and female vocal go to the front; Cecilia Bartoli has a
transparent voice, and I can feel the warm glow.
Norah Jones feels thirstier than usual in a languid voice.
Boys Air Choir has a transparent high note.

Maybe DIY Audio SA/F80AMG is better than ALTEC CF204-8A
about mid-low range, but CF204-8A has a higher resolution,
sense of the metal sound and string.
And ALTEC CF204-8A plays the rock music such as Avril Lavigne,
pop music and Grammy Nominees.

"Backloaded Altec"
The combination of MM-151S and ALTEC CF204-8A
gives an air of inclusion.
ALTEC CF204-8A is worth well more than the measured values.
I think MM-151S with ALTEC CF204-8A is more than acceptable
for a movie theater use, too.

I can take MM-151S apart at any time,
and I can enjoy the change of the sound by different tunings.
First, I will polish the horns with
sandpaper.

I gain much satisfaction
from MM-141S with DIY Audio SA/F80AMG.

I got customized brass adapter rings
for further improvement of the sound quality.
As expected of professionals, it was the right size
to the width of the front baffle board, and the excellent workmanship.

In this production of the speakers,
I want to thank Sunvalley and Hasehiro Audio.
They cater to my various special demands.
I brought trouble to them
because it was uncommon driver unit arrangement.
But I couldn't help it
because I was able to obtain the woofer KEF B110C
and the tweeter T27 of KEF LS3/5A.

Yearning JBL D208 full-range speaker driver
by James Bullough Lansing.

MM-181T with JBL D208
MM-181T with JBL D208

JBL D208 was used for
back loaded horn loudspeaker of the original Hartsfield D30208.

JBL D208
D208

That's a gentle plaintive sound, but that's not toothless and
not fuzzy sound.
Somehow that's sensitive and an amorous sound.

MM-181T with JBL D208

I think MM-191T is better than MM-181T
because of I felt like JBL D208 plays melodiously
on the whole baffle board.
So, I will change MM-181T to MM-191T anytime soon.

MM-181T: 280(W)X900(H)X450(D)mm

 Mr.K, Oita Pref.

July 2003
In the past, I had 2 back loaded horn speaker systems.
One was branded kit speaker but it was helpless ungodly noise.
The other was king size speaker loaded with 2 drivers.
My friend said, "The sound was audible from outside."
Eventually I gave up the king size speaker
in consideration of the neighbors.
About 8 years later, every time I listen to the back loaded horn sound
at my friend's home,
I desperately wanted back loaded horn speaker again.

I made expectations on Hasehiro back loaded horn's potential
and I bought MM-191T
because I have 20cm full-range drivers of 3 sets.
I guessed right!
What were previous my back loaded horn speakers?
I was surprised by the first voice without tweeter!
It has a tight low range with adequate hardness and elasticity.
And it has a well-projected midrange.
Previous my back loaded horn speakers didn't come out it of
the mid-low and the midrange, so I used tweeter shiftily.
I listened to a lot of vinyls and CDs without any change.
It seemed to me that it doesn't have a weak source.
I was surprised, too.

FE207E
FE207

Nevertheless, FOSTEX FE207 I bought 10 years ago has
a poor high range.
So, I added FOSTEX FT66H tweeter across a capacitor of 1ƒÊF
in the reverse direction without attenuator,
and I listened to the sound again.
It can also be used as monitor speaker
because it played unbelievably well!
By the way, I don't put any acoustic absorption materials
into MM-191T.
I found a new sound! I got a good thing, thank you!
I would like to join the MDF boards of MM-191T with
a bond.

(subsequent day)

I was bonded.
It drove the center of gravity of the sound down
over the whole range if it increased the rigidity.
In particular, I feel better about the extrusion capacity of low range.
The mid-high range had settled down pulled over to the horn
but grew in thickness.
So, it became listener-friendly vocal.
Overall, it were growing in an acoustic scale.
And I feel a sense of togetherness with FOSTEX FE207 because of
the increasing density.
So I feel compelled to turn up the volume.
As may be expected of the back loaded horn system,
it has a sound of 40cm class scale such as percussive roll
and contrabass note.

EAS-20F20
EAS-20F20

I exchanged FOSTEX FE207 for Technics EAS-20F20.
Technics EAS-20F20 pushes sound out of the way in full scale
compared to FOSTEX FE207 if it has a forceful magnetic circuit.
The low range is powerful and it has a braking power.
So, I can feel bass margin.
It has a slightly habit of the metal center cap, but surprisingly
it is ear-pleasing sound.
But it is reasonable if the source is a recording with a weak bass.

FOSTEX FE207 has a sensitive sharp sound, but a smallish audio image
such as a compact speaker.
That's OK, but I need more voluminous sound.
Still, it seems to extend the lower range.
For now, I intend to continue the aging of Technics EAS-20F20.
By the way, I don't put any acoustic absorption materials
into MM-191T still now.

SA/F80AMG
SA/F80AMG

I was surprised at the good sound of MM-141S
with DIY Audio SA/F80AMG.

I thought; "Mount FOSTEX 6N-FE88ES in hand into a bigger size."
So, I ordered custom-sized MM-141T and built.

All of the audio sources are room-filling sound.
I felt the spread of the space.
That's because MM-141T produces deep bass.
That deep bass is different from distorted deep bass by sub woofer.
That deep bass is a natural sound.
This is particularly prominent at organ in the classic music
and choral music.
It's hard to imagine that FOSTEX 6N-FE88ES is only 8cm drivers,
they have orotund deep bass by MM-141T.
I don't have the measuring equipment, so I don't know
the low-frequency range.
But I can hear properly.

MM-141T with 6N-FE88ES
MM-141T with FOSTEX 6N-FE88ES

One of jazz music is live recording, and the other is vocal music.
The ambience of a concert venue before the performance moves
through the air with high realistic sensation
when I listen to the live recording.
I feel great confidence to the sound of the deep bass
with a strong foundation.
I develop an illusion that they sing songs in front of me for real
when I listen to the vocal musics including J-pop.

Custom-sized MM-141T is deep depth, but it's narrow width.
So, they take up less space.
I left for my new post without my family.
So, they are set up in a small apartment now.
Eventually, I will set up them in the living room of my house.
And I plan to enjoy TV and movies with my family.
I don't feel the need for 5.1ch and sub woofer.
I am very pleased with just one small full-range speaker driver.
I will use MM-141T with S type habitually.

6N-FE88ES
6N-FE88ES

Compared with my main bass reflex speaker ALTEC 755E,
MM-141T with FOSTEX 6N-FE88ES is the lack of bass and hard sound.
Maybe it would be a range of the driver.
Anyway, I can do nothing but marvel at just 8cm driver.

Thank you for good speakers.

January 2003
In theory,
I understood I can get a wonderful bass tone by MM-1111T.
But I was afraid whether the bass tone would be in harmony
with the mid-high tone quality of
Eurodyn.

MM-1111T played a shapely rich bass like a charm, and
I could listen to the vintage Eurodyn sound for the first time.
Eurodyn had a sound of worldwide fame at the present day, too.
I drove MM-1111T by Mclntosh C22 with MC275 to honor Eurodyn
over 30 years ago.
Particularly, the vocal is great.

Eurodyn is dressed in armor like a griddle and the impedance is 15ƒ¶.
So it makes a strong personal statement.
I had a try in various ways but they failed the whole.
It remained on the shelves but it was really nice I has kept it
until now.
There's only one person in the world.
So, I am filled with a feeling of superiority. Thank you very much,
Hasehiro.

 Mr.Yasuo, Setagaya-ku, Tokyo

December 2002

I use ALTEC 604-8K as main loudspeaker, and ALTEC 755E
as subspeaker.
I mounted both ALTEC 205-8A and ALTEC 405-8H on MM-151.
I rear-mounted 205-8A, and front-mounted 405-8H.

It had an unexpected result.
Inexpensive ALTEC 205-8A had a much better than ALTEC 405-8H.

205-8A
205-8A

First I mounted ALTEC 405-8H on MM-151 from the front.
And I aged it for 4 consecutive days by
tough 300B single-ended amplifier.
Then, I compared it to BOSE 121. Is this back loaded horn sound...?
But BOSE 121 holds its own with ALTEC 405-8H with MM-151.

Then one day the custom-made baffles (the front aperture is 100mm
and the back aperture is 93mm) arrived at home from Hasehiro.
I mounted ALTEC 205-8A on the custom-made baffles.
Similarly, 205-8A is brand-new drivers.
But it's a good sound from the beginning.
It's definitely bright and lively ALTEC sound!
Particularly, ALTEC 205-8A is better than ALTEC 405-8H
about high-tone range.
At least, I thought ALTEC 205-8A suits MM-151 better than 405-8H.
Both drivers have the same magnets, but their cone papers
and edges are different, sound is so different.
Like Western Electric WE755A and ALTEC 755E...

Will I paint it ALTEC-GRAY...?
Will I purchase MM-T for ALTEC 755E next year...?
I use ALTEC 755E on closed boxes with ALTEC 3000H tweeters.

MM-151: 190(W)X450(H)X410(D)mm

 January 2003

755E
755E

Soon, I bought MM-191T.
I remounted ALTEC 755E from closed boxes to MM-191T.
I bought 755E before because I couldn't buy Western Electric WE755A
at that time.
755E cones became free, and clogged bass blew over by MM-191T.
Originally it is modest sound, so I felt weak sound
on the mid-high note after that.
They are still need ALTEC 3000H tweeters.
I want to hear music by WE755A with MM-191T.

Recently, I bought JBL D208.
The logoed stickers include the phrase, "JIM LANSING signature"
So, it's very likely that they are very old.
They have alnico magnet and fixed edge, but they were replaced
cone papers by JBL.
So, they have brand-new cones and caps.
I compared the sound of them to the original when I bought.
They were comparable to the original.

JIM LANSING signature D208
JIM LANSING signature D208

I bought JIM LANSING signature D208 for MM-191T.
D208 was released in 1947, Western Electric WE755A was also
released in the same year.
It's the same with alnico magnet and fixed edge.
D208 played on the historic known back loaded horn loudspeaker
"Hartsfield"
It's hardly possible that D208 doesn't fit MM-191T.

D208 has started to show its abilities by degrees.
MM-191T with D208 is great!!
I heard the sound alternately D208 and Lowther PM6A over again
and again.
Eventually, I chose D208 as the master of MM-191T.
I can enjoy the D208 sound without tweeters.

MM-191T and MM-151
(RS) MM-191T with JBL D208 and PIONEER PT-R9
(LS) MM-151 with ALTEC 205-8A

But I put PIONEER PT-R9 tweeters on 9kHz or later (-12dB/oct)
without attenuator in phase.
That is terrific!!
PIONEER PT-R9 is for a large system.
Such super tweeters match well with MM-191T with D208,
means MM-191T with D208 demonstrated a high completion rate.

I think that 20cm full-range speaker driver has many fans.
I would recommend MM-191T without hesitation.

MM-191T: 310(W)X900(H)X450(D)mm

 February 2003
I'm glad I decided to mount JBL D208 on MM-191T.
What about JBL LE8T...?
I bought it with JBL PR8 passive radiators as JBL L44 Lancer.
JBL LT8T that I bought is early type of white rubber edge.
(produced until about 1973)

First of all, I listened to the sound of JBL L44 Lancer.
It was good for more than 30 years ago.
But the hardened edge has a negative consequence for the sound
due to the passive radiator system.

Next, JBL LE8T is mounted on MM-191T to preview the sound.
Its magnet is bigger than JBL D208, but its cone paper is
heavy in weight and it's rolled edge.
So, there is strong evidence that JBL D208 is better suited to
back loaded horn system than JBL LE8T.
But audio is not explained by theory, it's really an issue of the liking.

It was very good.
The hardened edge doesn't have a negative consequence for
the back loaded horn sound.
JBL LE8T has good chemistry with JBL 2405 alnico tweeters (16ƒ¶).
But, compared with JBL D208, LE8T has weak response to sound,
and blunt drumbeat and bass sound.
However, it's powerful good sound out of doubt compared
with JBL L44 Lancer.

MM-191T with JBL LE8T and 2405
MM-191T with JBL LE8T and JBL 2405

MM-191T with JBL D208 is suitable for classical music, and MM-191T
with JBL LE8T is suitable for jazz music.

I drove them by Western Electric 300B single-ended amplifier
and McIntosh C22 special edition preamplifier.
