RECOVERED ALTEC SOUND unforgettable
episode |
published in Jul.2005: Several
months ago, Mr.K living in Niigata visited Hasehiro
Audio. He previewed the various combinations of enclosure
and driver. Among them, he has fallen in love at first
hearing with the dried ALTEC SOUND. He purchased a
combination of MM-151ST and ALTEC CF204-8A. He loved a
clear-cut ALTEC SOUND so much. One day, he
came to Hasehiro Audio and listened to the sound of SSC-impregnated MM
speaker. He said,"My father is a carpenter, and he
can japan. So I'll have my MM-151ST japanned. I am sure it
will become a better sound, just like SSC." It is
always said that japan makes good sound. The surface of
japan ware is hard, and it is also impregnation material,
like SSC. So, Hasehiro was looking forward to the sound. He
said,"I'll bring my MM-151ST if it completes, and listen
to the sound together." Over two months
have passed. Hasehiro received a call from him. He
said,"It has finally been completed, but the sound went
bad than before. I'll bring my MM-151ST this Saturday, and
please tell me how to regain that
sound.

Aug.2005: Hasehiro had heard from him that the
color is not bright red, it's black. But the finish didn't
have a bright polish. The front and the side baffle boards
have austerely elegant color, perhaps because it had a low
absorption rate. But the cutting surfaces of MDF, such as
the front surface and the top board seemed to absorb enough
japan. It seemed strange because it was like thick black
writing fluid.
He says it takes a high polish and he is going
to polish up it at the end. |
Hasehiro played percussive jazz CD.
It's true that it is strange. ALTEC CF204-8A's
cheerful dried sound is gone. It changed to a calming
sound quality. Distinctive ALTEC SOUND
has disappeared completely. ALTEC for jazz changed
to ELCY Electric LC-12S for classical. Hasehiro never
thought sound |

gets too soft by paint
application. Original ALTEC CF204-8A played
spine-tinglingly hi-hat cymbal, but it became
soggy tone like put a damp cloth over the
cymbal. |

Hasehiro
replaced CD to his favorite Kristina & Laura, and
played "City of Dreams", he listen to it very often when he
wants to check the sound of strings. He waited for the
sound to come out with closed eyes. First, violoncello
performance started. Feel good, that's fine! Hasehiro was
chillaxing to the sound. Next, violin chases after
violoncello ottavino. That's fine, too! Then,
piano performance. It gave him goose
bumps. Hasehiro could understand the sound quality a
little if it is ALTEC CF404-8A, but it is CF204-8A. It can
never produce like the sound. In general, coating
material for improvement of sound quality including SSC
compound stops the resonance of the
enclosure by the strength increase. So, he asked paint
plant about japan later. According to the paint plant,
japan permeates into it, and concretes remain soft. So it
became soft sound. In case of SSC, it permeates into it,
and harden like a
stone. |
Mr.K said,"I'm a
vocal pop
listener, and never listen to classical music. I loved a
clear-cut ALTEC SOUND, but japan completely changed
the sound. How can I retrieve the ALTEC
SOUND? I'll
buy anything for this." Hasehiro
replied,"This is really awesome! I think it would
be a waster trying
to get the sound back. Maybe everyone will
have a great desire for the sound. I want this,
too." But his feelings remain the
same. Hasehiro thought he has to plane the japan
part, but I can't say it. Because his father finished the
work with gloves and goggle spend two
months. Hasehiro thought a few seconds, I'll buy this
japanned MM-151ST from him and ask him to change it with a
new MM-151ST. Then, Hasehiro recalled
that SSC-impregnated CF204-8A is at hand. He had an intuitive
feeling that this is it. Hasehiro immediately
replaced the natural ALTEC CF204-8A with the
SSC-impregnated CF204-8A, and played Mr.K's
CD. |
The cone of the SSC-impregnated CF204-8A
glistens with SSC. It produces neither paper
nor polypropylene sound
when tapped a finger on the cone. As a result, Mr.K was
greatly pleased with the sound. "I want to paint the
cone with SSC soon when I get home." Mr.K rushed
home after purchase the SSC compound for driver
diaphragm.
About a week later, Hasehiro received a call from
him. "I'm greatly pleased with the sound! It
became congruent with the sound I heard at Hasehiro Audio
after five coats." (This SSC compound

driver is weak prepared compared to it for
enclosure.) Anyway, tone color changes
dramatically by the coating material of the
enclosure. It's not an exaggeration to say that enclosure
itself is diaphragm. |
